Our new contemporary fiction this month isn't the lightest - novels are set during Nigeria's vicious civil war, feature child soldiers of the Ivory Coast and employees of the Danish Centre for Genocide Studies. Family are lost in a ferry accident, the bones of a young girl are found buried in the cellar of a Catholic church in Omaha, Nebraska, and a therapist experiences anger, grief, boredom, frustration, and resentment. Not to read when in a delicate mood.

Somewhat depressing contemporary fiction
